1. Vietnam: Snakes and turtles confiscated in northern Vietnam

On the 28th of March 2017, the patrol team of the Traffic Police of Bac Giang Province, northern Vietnam, stopped and checked a 16-seat car in Lang Son district on Highway 1A heading from Hanoi to Lang Son province (on the China borderer). Upon investigation, the police confiscated 3kg of snakes and 33.7 kg of turtles. The animals were wrapped in mesh bags and backpacks hidden in the car.

ATP NOTE: As seen from the video, the turtles include Big-headed Turtles (Platysternon megacephalum), Giant Asian Pond Turtle (Heosemys grandis), and Impressed Tortoises (Manouria impressa). We are following the case to see if these animals can be rescued.

2. The USA: One shell of a time: Desert tortoise saved from mine shaft

The Arizona Game and Fish Department rescued a desert tortoise Tuesday from a mine shaft near the Suizo Mountains north of Tucson (Arizona, the USA), according to the AZGFD Facebook page. he tortoise was released unharmed, the page said.

3. India: Khokon Saha, big fish of turtle trade, in West Bengal police net

The West Bengal CID has arrested Khokon Saha, a 65-year-old man who is one of the "top three traders" involved in the smuggling of endangered species in the state.

According to the police, the accused dealt with two species of turtles - Indian Flapshell (Lissemys punctata) and Indian Softshell (Nilssonia gangetica) - both endangered and protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act (WPA), 1972.

4. The USA: Turtle protections take effect in Iowa

Environmental activists claimed victory as limits intended to rein in Iowa's commercial turtle trapping industry took effect this week.

Before the restrictions took effect, Iowa was one of only a handful of states that allowed commercial trappers to catch unlimited numbers of certain turtles. Biologists warned that the state's relatively lax restrictions have resulted in some alarming trends in long-term harvest data that could threaten the sustainability of the state's turtle population.

5. Malaysia: A boost for turtle conservation

Turtle conservation efforts at the coast of Tanjung Datu in Malaysia received a much-needed boost after a partnership was formalised between Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and Sarawak Energy.

The state power utility and energy developer has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance SFC’s turtle conservation programme and promote ecotourism at the landing sites at Tanjung Datu National Park, Pulau Talang-Talang Besar and Pulau Talang-Talang Kechil in Malaysia.
