World Sea Turtle Day – 16th June

16th June marks World Sea Turtle Day, a day used to honor and highlight the importance of sea turtles. Of the seven species of sea turtle (superfamily Chelonioidea), three are either Endangered (Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas)) or Critically Endangered (Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle (Lepidochelys kempii), Hawksbill Sea Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata)), three are Vulnerable (Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta), Olive Ridley Sea Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), Leatherback Sea Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)) and the last (Flatback Sea Turtle (Natator depressus)) is not classified due to data deficiency. The most important threat to sea turtle populations worldwide is human activity, whether directly or indirectly.

World Sea Turtle Day is celebrated on the same day as the birthday of Dr. Archie Carr, the founder of Sea Turtle Conservancy and largely recognised as the “father of sea turtle biology”. Dr. Carr made profound contributions to the sea turtle protection.

Join us to celebrate #WorldSeaTurtleDay and the #SeaTurtleWeek and help protect sea turtle species!
