Keeled box turtle rescued following web monitoring

On 9th October 2009, a Keeled Box Turtle (Cuora mouhotii) was brought to Education for Nature Vietnam’s office by a resident in Ha Noi. The endangered turtle species had been seen advertised for sale in a Vietnamese pet forum where it was discovered by an Asian Turtle Program (ATP) staff member monitoring forums for turtle trade. The lucky turtle was transferred to Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) in Cuc Phuong National Park and the advertisement was removed by the forum’s administrator following a discussion with Eductionfor Nature Vietnam (ENV). Unfortunately the increase in internet sales of wildlife in Vietnam as with elsewhere in the southeast Asia region appears to be on the increase. Difficult to regulate and locate the animals with anonymity to traders is something which will require additional resources and skills to tackle in the future.
